Brooklyn, NY, may be home to the first SoFabU on the Road event of 2016, but it’s also the perfect setting for a family getaway. Plan to stay a few days and enjoy all that Brooklyn has to offer.
New York is known for it’s public transportation system, with a multitude of lines running through all of the NYC boroughs. (Click HERE for a NY subway map.) There is no need to rent a car because the subway system, combined with the NY taxi service, will take you anywhere you could ever want to go.
Keep in mind, however, that the taxi service may get a bit expensive, so try to take the subway whenever possible.
Looking for a more fun way to get around? Rent a bike from Citi Bikes and pedal your way around Brooklyn! Citi Bikes is a bike-sharing program in which riders can simply unlock a bike from any of the Citi Bike stations by purchasing a 24-hour or 7-day pass.
Food & Drink
No trip to NY would be complete without two things: pizza and cheesecake. New York has an abundance of choices for these two city staples, but locals recommend Juniors Cheesecake and Pizza Loves Emily.
Juniors Cheesecake’s landmark location is right in the heart of Brooklyn, and they’ve been feeding Brooklyn locals since 1950. Want more than cheesecake? Junior’s has a full service bar and a great menu that also includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. You can even satisfy your hunger cravings late into the night, as they stay open most nights until midnight.
Pizza Loves Emily was created by Emily and her husband Matt out of their love affair throughout their relationship with pizza. With a variety of fresh ingredients and handmade dough, the pizza selection is top-notch and not to be missed.
Sights & Sounds
No trip to Brooklyn would be complete without visiting the iconic Brooklyn Bridge, but to see the bridge from a different perspective, be sure to visit Brooklyn Heights, an affluent residential neighborhood nestled right next to the bridge. You’ll have a gorgeous view of the Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty, and, yes, even the Brooklyn Bridge.
Be sure to check out the Brooklyn Bridge Park while there. The Ed Center, and environmental education center that is perfect for kids, is hosting open visitation during the weekend of SFUOTR. You can also enjoy rock-climbing, roller skating, swimming, biking, a carousel and so much more!
Get out and enjoy the fresh air and beautiful aromas of thousands of flowers at Brooklyn Botanic Garden. With adult admission at only $12, and children under 12 visiting for free, this is a budget-friendly and beautiful way to spend an afternoon.
Finally, plan to spend Friday evening at the iconic Coney Island. Enjoy rides, games, and sideshows in this pop culture lover’s dream amusement park, and stick around for fireworks at 9:30pm every Friday night. Don’t forget to try a Coney Island hot dog!
There is no shortage of fun to be had in Brooklyn, so bring the family and plan to spend the entire weekend! See you in Brooklyn!
